Feeding

You are what you eat, as the old saying goes, and this also applies to our pets. Eating too much of the wrong kind of food is the main reason so many pets are overweight. By making some simple changes to your pet's diet, you can make a big difference to their weight and wellbeing.

Cut out the tit bits
Leftovers from the table are a slim pet's number one enemy! We tend to give the least healthy bits from our meals, such as fatty bits of meat, and these go straight from your plate onto your pet's hips!
Feed smaller meals
Small, regular meals are better than one big meal, so divide your dog's food into two small meals, morning and evening, and offer your cat small portions of food three or four times a day rather than leaving food down for them all day.
Use healthy fillers
Grated veg such as carrots or courgettes add bulk to food but contain few calories so they are a good way of filling your pet up while not piling on the pounds.
Reduce the calories
The ideal way to keep your pet slim is to feed them exactly the right amount of calries, or energy, everyday. If they are overweight, then you need to feed less, or use a lower calorie food, Ask your vet for advice.
Choose a healthy food
Avoid 'junk foods' containing high levels of sugars, fats and artificial additives.
